Did you know that the greater majority of commercial health and fitness
clubs require a long-term contractual agreement that mandates a checking
account for them to debit each month? Well, what if you want to change gyms?
What if you are moving? Heck, what if you'd rather not give them access
to your social security number and checking account in the first place?
Here's some health and fitness news you can use! First, pay for your membership
in cash. Gyms crave cash. You'll save money in the long run, and can try
to broker a better deal since you're paying up front in cold hard cash.
Not only will this free you up from the health club's crazy gym contracts,
but your personal information is secured! Having a healthy and fitness-like
budget is great! Of most importance, you can pay the health & fitness
club in three-month installments, so if you ever want to cancel or go elsewhere
(or need a break from your fitness routine), it's no sweat!
A health club in Ireland isn't breaking the law by apparently limiting the weight of its staff, particularly women larger than size 16. Audrey Williams, an attorney with the law firm Eversheds. As long as the weight limit is applied equally to both sexes, the policy is not illegal.
It is comparable to a policy of hiring only beautiful people, although greatly disfigured individuals could not be turned away on that basis, as they are protected by disability laws. (One wonders that the overweight rejects will soon assert that they, too, are disabled on account of their size.)
Though not specifically putting a poundage limit on its applicants, the chief executive of the health club, Fitness First, did email managers with a reminder that uniforms should not be requested over a size 16. The premise is that larger sized employees are out of place in a business such as a health club, where weight loss and fitness are promoted. However, the company said the comment was taken out of context, and they will continue to employ plus-sized people.
Scores of laws are anti-discriminatory, protecting individuals from bias due to race, gender disability, marital status, trade unit membership, prison time served, and part-time work More laws regarding sexual preference and religion will follow this year. Still a certain amount of Employer preference is still allowed.
Regardless, it would be difficult to get rid of fat employees simply on that basis. To permissibly dismiss them, a company would need to outline the policy to staff members and provide a reasonable weight loss goal for employees.
Then, if they fail to meet their target, it would be permissible to get rid of them.
