There are as many myths when it comes to weight loss as there are diets and weight loss products.
One of the most common mistake people still make 'til this day is thinking they will lose weight if they stop eating completely. A lot of people are not aware of the fact that if you don't feed your system any food the rate of burning calories will slow down to the point that your metabolism will eventually be non existing. If your metabolism slows down, your body won't burn off any calories at all whether you eat a lot or a little.
The second most common mistake people make, when trying to lose weight is to eat only two meals a day. Eating one meal in the morning and one at night is basically telling your body that you are about to go into a starvation mode which will only result in your body holding onto the few calories it gets, thinking there won't be any more nutrients coming in any time soon. Again, your metabolism is slowing down to the point that whatever you eat is going to be hard work for your body to process.
Keeping this in mind, imagine trying to function all day and then in addition trying to work out on the few calories that you have supplied your body with. It's nearly impossible to accomplish any progress that way.
There is no magic pill when it comes to losing unwanted weight, only hard work and a proper weight loss diet.
There is no short cut to a healthy, fit body. Eating a healthy diet, exercising and leading an active lifestyle is the only way and always will be. So the sooner you join the group of people that has gotten this message the sooner you will be able to reap the rewards from all your hard work.
The old fashion diets with no carbohydrates at all are a waste of time. Anybody who knows a little bit about how your body works also knows that you need protein, carbohydrates and fat to be able to function every day. It's a matter of eating the correct amount of the three according to your lifestyle, age and activity level that will make a difference in the long run.
All the diets you read about in the magazines that states that eating a grapefruit a day will make you lose weight or eating only grapes will give you a bikini body in no time will probably work for a week or two if you manage to stay on them that long. The fact is that every time you change something in your diet your body will react to it. If you cut your calories back for a week, eating only grapes all day, of course you will drop a few pounds right away but we both know that you can't live off grapes alone for the rest of your life. Eventually you will have to eat some protein and fat if you want to survive and the pounds you lost will slowly come back. This is not the way to lose weight. You need to change your eating habits for good or you won't be able to stick to it. Nothing is more frustrating then to gain the weight you lost, back again. These are what we call the yo-yo diets. They never work but people still try them. One is more ridiculous then the other, only to end up even more frustrated with your weight.
The myth about the magic pill you can take, lie on the couch and still lose weight is pretty much just that, a myth. Your metabolism works just like a car engine. If you put the correct fuel in it, it drives better and when it runs out of fuel, it stops. To be able to drive, the engine needs to burn fuel just like your body needs to burn calories to function and stay healthy. There is no magic pill that you can put into your car's engine that does the same thing as the engineered system of your car, nor is there a pill that will do the work of your metabolism in your body system. Still people spend tons of money every year with the hopes of finding the pill that works for them.
There are diet supplements that will increase your metabolism or suppress your appetite slightly, but you still have to eat right and exercise to reach your fitness goals.
It seems almost impossible to make somebody who eats only two meals a day and can't lose any weight, understand that they need to eat more in order to lose weight. Through all times, the myth that eating less equals weight loss is forever imprinted in peoples mind and nothing can change that. Not even the fact that they see no result from their effort.
One pearl of weight loss wisdom is the reverse opposite of the truth: Without the weight loss myths, the nutrition & supplement corporate giants would not make billions off those who've been brainwashed into a never-ending quest for the ultimate weight loss quick fix. This myth is perpetuated in all levels of commerce and capitalism.
And that's a fact.
